Malawi has declared a cholera outbreak, which has already claimed over 600 lives. In view of increasing cases, authorities in the country have pushed back school reopening dates.
A whole host of countries have now declared that they will require negative Covid reports for incoming passengers from China. South Korea, Canada, and Chile have just become the latest. Morocco has gone a step further and imposed a ban on all passengers from China. Belgium and Malaysia say they will test wastewater on flights from China. China, too, has updated its national Covid regulations to begin wastewater testing. The only offer of help for China amid this spate of infections has come from the EU, with its offer to supply free Covid vaccines to the country.
And finally, over in the UK, authorities seem to have learned a lesson from their response to the strikes by nursing and paramedic staff last month. So well have they learned their lesson that the same healthcare personnel have declared their intent to plan more strikes this year. Maybe denial of wage talks and suspension of staff may not have been the way to go.
